For spring, designers turned away from the masculine and minimal styles of seasons past and returned to the idea of craftsmanship. Well-made clothing with lots of details brought back the mid-century idea of investment garments. It was nice to see designers play with what the concept of couture, rather than the scaled-down design we’ve seen recently.
‘60s Coats & Pseudo Military Jackets:
In the light coat department, Michael Kors debuted a selection of colorful, A-line shaped coats, with a simple yet refined ‘60s feel. For a rougher look, Wes Gordon’s military -inspired vests elegantly blended military grit, with a flared and flirtatious bottom.
Colorful & Eclectic Prints:
It seemed as long as designers stuck to two or three colors at most, the whole anything goes philosophy continued to work in prints. However, designers are pushing the envelope for spring, mixing and matching a variety of prints, with a careful eye. The question is do you have the attitude to pull it off?
“Flatforms”:
This trend in women’s shoes is being hailed as one of the freshest in years: a marriage between the platform and wedge. These are flat, platform shoes that give your stiletto-worn feet a break while still adding 3 to 4 inches to your stature.
Trench Dresses:
The “trench dress” has taken two old staples of the runway, the trench coat and sheath dress, and married them to create a striking garment. This season’s version is more refined than casual, making it the perfect choice for eveningwear.
Assorted Accessories:
Among accessories, wrapped and tied head scarves from Marc Jacobs and Anna Sui offered a retro look, while Ralph Lauren resurrected stocking caps adorned with crystals and pearls for a more elegant feel. Tribal looking chokers with feathers and charms also made an appearance, along with clear cowboy boots from Marc Jacobs, and embroidered shawls from Ralph Lauren.
